Nestled in southern Spain’s Sierra Nevada mountains is the ancient city of Granada, long considered one of Spain’s greatest hidden treasures. Resting on a scarped ridge crowning a wooded hill, and dominating the landscape, sits Granada’s architectural jewel --- the Alhambra – fabled palace and stronghold of the Moorish sultans.

Early in the eighth century, Muslim warriors from North Africa invaded the Iberian Peninsula, bringing with them a cosmopolitan and sophisticated culture. The Moors, generally tolerant of other faiths, successfully occupied southern Spain for more than 700 years. Granada became one of the greatest cities of the civilized world.

But by the thirteenth century, the Christian knights were slowly reconquering the Iberian Peninsula. The Moors could sense that their glory days were coming to an end. So they devoted themselves to transforming Granada’s Alhambra, or “red fortress,” into the most lavishly appointed palace Spain had ever seen.

The Alhambra is the epitome of Moorish artistry and architecture. For hundreds of years, it has captivated the imagination of writers, artists, and adventurers. It remains as the only surviving monument of Islamic Granada’s great cultural outpouring.
