New York is a city of famous buildings and monuments, but the Big Apple sports a true modern wonder in the majestic Empire State Building. Probably the world’s most recognizable skyscraper, it remains America’s second tallest building.

Legend has it that, upon meeting, William Lamb (the building’s architect) asked John Raksob (the building’s financier) what he had in mind. In response, Raksob pulled a thick pencil out of his desk, held it upright, and said, “How high can you make it so won’t fall down?” Lamb’s solution? A building designed with an internal pyramid for ducts, elevators, and hallways, surrounded by another pyramid of office space.

Build in 1930, the Empire State Building’s art deco design is a delightful synergy of early twentieth-century technological innovation and classical motifs. In addition to its classic appearance, the construction of the Empire State Building was an unparalleled feat of organization and efficiency with construction averaging 4.5 floors per week! This rate of ascent remains unsurpassed.

No other building is identified more closely with the Big Apple. It was even named after New York State’s own nickname. For its groundbreaking architecture and engineering, the Empire State Building continues to set the standard against which other skyscrapers are judged.

Jenny and Ryan, university civil engineering students, are walking on-campus in New York:

R: I still can’t believe the Twin Towers are gone. It seems like a movie …

J: You know, they weren’t the first buildings in New York to be hit by a plane. An Air Force bomber crashed into the Empire State Building in 1945, although that was an accident.

R: Yeah, But the building was constructed so well that the damage was neither critical nor structural. The fact that it was built into solid bedrock probably helped.

J: Also sounds like solid engineering. Even in winds of 160 kph, the Empire State Building sways less than a centimeter to each side.

R: And unbelievable, the whole steel was welded together in a blistering twenty-three weeks. Talk about motivation!

J: What amazes me most is that the whole massive undertaking was accomplished in just over thirteen months. They must’ve hired some top-of-the-line construction engineers.

R: Ironically, because it was finished in the middle of the depression, lots of office space stayed vacant, earning it the nickname the “Empty State Building” for a while.

J: With 97 percent of its space rented, it sure ain’t empty now! That’s more than I can say for my stomach – let’s get a hot dog.
