Scientists working for L’Oreal in Paris have discovered the source of straight and curly hair. The key, it turns out, is in the root of the hair, a few millimeters below the scalp. Hair roots that have straight bulbs produce straight hair; bulbs that are curly, or hooked, produce curly or wavy hair.

The research involved samples from the three basic types of human hair: Caucasian, Asian, and African. Hair was analyzed at the molecular level with the use of X-rays and the results could usher in a whole new world of biological hair products.

Any new product would be hormone based as it seems that hormones are able to influence hair type. Studies of AIDS patients, for example, have revealed that curly-haired people taking hormonal drugs will actually find that their hair is becoming straight.

The L’Oreal news has predictably generated a lot of enthusiasm. Worldwide, billions of dollars are spent yearly on perms and straighteners– but these are known to make hair brittle. Vast sums are also spent on hair dyes – but these are only temporary. Hormone shampoos and drugs, however, promise a permanent solution. Eventually, getting a new hairstyle may involve a trip to the pharmacy rather than the hairdresser. But don’t throw out your curlers and dyes just yet. Scientists caution that they’ve only taken the first steps in this new field.
