North Korea Conducts Underground Nuclear Test
Monday, October 9th marked a new height in regional tensions when North Korea claimed to have carried out an underground nuclear test. Scientists in Japan confirmed that the test took place near the city kilju, on the Korean Peninsula’s northeast coast.
The test drew a wave of international criticism and exposed North Korea’s already poverty-stricken economy to new sanctions. North Korea said it would consider any sanctions to be a “declaration of war,” and its leader Kim Jong-Il threatened to conduct more tests. Despite these warnings, the U.N. security Council has already voted to impose strict trade restrictions.
Astronomical Forces Led to Extinctions
Dutch scientists have linked changes in the Earth’s orbit and tilt to the extinction of certain mammal species. Previous studies had indicated that life was remarkably resilient to climate change. Yet when Dr. Jan van Dam and his colleagues examined the fossils of rodents collected in Spain, they came to a different conclusion.
According to the researchers, there have been at least two instances of rodent extinction linked to climate change. Each change in the climate occurred following shifts in either the Earth’s orbit or its tilt on its axis. These shifts brought about cooling periods, which in turn affected habitats and food availability. Ultimately, the Earth’s climate became unsuitable for certain rodents and these tiny mammals died off.
