Perched high up in the trees of Yangmingshan lies Taiwan’s national bird. ___1___ vivid purplish-blue feathers and a long white and blue tail, Formosan blue magpies are certainly one of the most beautiful birds in the world.

Blue magpies are similar to European magpies with one lengthy exception. Their tails ___2___ over half of their body and can grow to be 40 cm long. No wonder they ___3___ the nickname “the long-tailed mountain lady.” Although their elegance and grace can be breathtaking, don’t be fooled by their appearance. In the animal kingdom, blue magpies are pretty tough customers. They are known to let out a frightening ___4___ cackle to make their presence known, like a grumpy old man telling kids to stay off his lawn. Yet, ___5___ it comes to food, these birds are not picky. They can eat both plants and animals. But usually, their favorite snacks are wild figs and papayas.
