Around the beginning of every winter, thousands of butterflies travel across Taiwan, flowing through the skies like a deep purple river. ___1___

Each October, these beautiful insects travel from northern Taiwan to spend the winter in one of the approximately 30 “purple butterfly valleys” in southern Taiwan. ___2___ Tiny white dots on their blue and purple wings cause them to magically change color in sunlight, an effect described as “illusory light.”
