In 1965, with only 600,000 yen, a 24-year-old Japanese man set off from Osaka, Japan on his grand tour of Europe to study architecture. His name was Tadao Ando. Little did he know that 30 years later, he would win the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the Nobel Prize of the profession.
Ando did not take the straight and narrow path to become an architect. He toiled as a truck driver, and was even a boxer for a while. Ando had no formal training in architecture. He was self-taught, pulling information from books and visiting the actual buildings he read about. For him, traveling was a spiritual journey that allowed him to see, think, and create.
During his teenage years, Ando apprenticed to a local carpenter and built a variety of wooden models. He created ships, airplanes and other objects out of wood. Browsing through a used bookstore one day, he came across a book of Le Corbusier sketches. Finding himself deeply inspired by Le Corbusier, Ando traced the drawings in the book repeatedly until the pages turned black.
Ando tried to further his studies by apprenticing for designers and city planners. However, in his own words, “I was never a good student. I always preferred learning things on my own outside class.” And so, still wet behind the ears, he started visiting tea houses in Kyoto and Nara to observe traditional Japanese architecture. He kept detailed sketches of what he saw. With the combination of these observations and his wondrous imagination, Ando was able to create his own architectural style.

After a period of self-education, Ando founded his own architectural firm in 1969. When his work, the Row House (Azuma) won the Japanese Architectural Association Prize, he became known far and wide. This structure draws attention because of its doorway framed within a blank concrete façade. The space within is divided into three equal rectangles. Closest to the entrance is the living room, with a bedroom above it. It is meant to give a separate space for thought in the urban chaos of the modern world.
Ando was catapulted into international fame upon the completion of his Rokko Housing on the slope of the Rokko Mountains in 1983. It is an apartment complex comprised of units of exactly the same size. Each of the apartments, constructed in a stepped fashion, has a view of the Osaka harbor. To Ando, this is the work that entirely captures his many ideas, even though it may appearsimplistic on the surface. “I think architecture becomes interesting when it has a double character,” he says, “that is, when it is as simple as possible but, at the same time as complex as possible.”
Later on, Ando put together a series of religious works. His Church of Light demonstrates his signature concrete walls, in a long square tunnel ending in a wall with a cross of light. There is a strong contrast between light and shade. The texture and darkness of the floors and pews enhance the experience of seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. With such simple construction, it appears as an ideal source for meditation.

Throughout the 1990s and into the new millennium, Tadao Ando has designed many internationally acclaimed works, including the Meditation Space in Paris, and Fabrica, the Benetton Research Center in Italy. He also had solo exhibitions in New York, London, and Paris. Despite his worldwide fame, Ando still works in his hometown of Osaka.
Today, Ando has embarked on his most ambitious project to date, revealing his design for what will become by far the world’s tallest structure. The New Tokyo Tower will stand 610 meters tall, surpassing Toronto’s CN Tower, the current tallest structure, by nearly 60 meters. The building will stand on a triangular foundation, and its slim body will taper into a silver-blue cylinder as it reaches towards the sky.
Ando connects the art of building to the art of living. For Ando, architecture is defined as “the box that provokes.” He believes that buildings can challenge us to think and change the way we perceive the world. However, he has also said, “I do not believe architecture should speak too much. It should remain silent and let nature in the guise of sunlight and wind speak.”
Ando believes in the three indispensable principles of architecture, which are function, strength, and beauty. Each principle works with the other two to create a finished work. For Ando, architecture not only is a place for a person to live in, but it also provides a measure of inspiration. Architecture goes hand in hand with human thought. It switches back and forth between an idea and reality. What can be imagined can be built.
