For over 250 years, the British Museum has collected and housed an incredible array of artifacts, documenting the advance of humankind. It is home to over seven million objects, spanning over two million years of history.
Some of this history will come alive in Taipei due to the collaboration between the National Palace Museum and the British Museum. 271 works will be featured from all around the world, ranging from the Paleolithic Age right up to the 20th century.
One of the highlights of the show includes the oldest artifacts of human civilization discovered so far. Around two million years ago, man first began to make chopping tools at the Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania, Africa. Fist-sized choppers made of rock with rough curved blades as well as utensils and carvings will also be on display.
From Egypt, visitors will get to see the wooden inner coffin of Djeho, a man of high rank, dating back to around 300 BC. The application of gold leaf to his face and his blue hair indicate the divine qualities he attained. There’s also a beautiful cast bronze statue of the messenger god Hermes from Ancient Greece. Moving east to Pakistan, one can marvel over a 2th – century standing Buddha made of gray rock.
This special exhibit at the National Palace Museum runs February 4th through May 27th . This is the first exhibition of its kind on Taiwan soil, so don’t let history pass you by!
