Never in the delirious dream of a disordered brain could anything more savage, more appalling, more hellish be conceived than that dark form and savage face which broke upon us out of the wall of fog.
-- from theHoundof the Baskervilles.
The frozen corpse lying on the metal bed looks like the body of a man who has died a terrible death. It is a mystery to Dr. Mortimer how Sir Charles Baskerville has met his end. The doctor believes that perhaps the myth of a supernatural black beast that kills the Baskerville family members may be true. With Sir Henry, who has inherited the Baskerville Hall, arriving soon, Mortimer turns to Sherlock Holmes for help before the curse strikes again.
From the moment Sir Henry arrives, odd things begin to happen. First he receives a letter threatening his life, and then one of his boots goes missing. Holmes and his assistant Watson also discover that a mysterious stranger, who they think is in disguise, has been following Sir Henry since his arrival. Holmes instructs Watson to accompany Sir Henry and Mortimer to Baskerville Hall to watch over things. He asks Watson to keep an eye on anyone who might be involved in the murder and insist that Watson report back regularly on his findings.
With little time to think, Watson departs for Baskerville Hall, which is a haunting place surrounded by swamps. Upon arrival he meets Mr. and Mrs. Barrymore, the servants of Baskerville Hall, as well as the strange quiet neighbors, Mr. Stapleton and his sister. All of them behave as though they are hiding some secrets.
Miss Stapleton, on seeing Watson for the first time and thinking he must be Sir Henry, warns him to leave immediately. When questioned, she evades answering, which further adds to Watson’s suspicion. Watson then sees a shadowy figure wandering around Baskerville late at night. For Watson, the mystery only grows darker. And at the darkest hour, Watson hears the sound of a howling beast which sends shivers down his spine.

On speaking to one of the locals, Watson realizes that there is a stranger living in an old abandoned house. He believes this is the figure he has seen out on the moorland. Lying in wait for him, gun at the ready, Watson is shocked to find that it is none other than Sherlock Holmes himself! Holmes was secretly investigating the murder because he knew the suspect would be on his guard if he knew Holmes was there.
Sir Henry invites him to join Watson in staying on his estate. And while dining, the incredible detective realizes that the neighbor, Stapleton, bears a striking resemblance to a portrait of Hugo Baskerville, an ancestor who was supposedly killed by the curse. His suspicions lead to a background check which reveals some interesting history about Stapleton. It is then that Holmes, with his powers of deductive reasoning, puts the pieces of the puzzle together.
As it turns out, Mr. Stapleton, a Baskerville relative, is indeed a wolf in sheep’s clothing. He had Sir Charles killed, hoping to inherit Baskerville Hall. It is his giant beast-like dog that has been trained to kill whomever Stapleton commands. It was he who was following Sir Henry and then stole his boot so that his mad dog would learn his smell. The threatening note that Sir Henry received was actually from Miss Stapleton. Aware of Stapleton’s intentions, she was trying to warn Sir Henry not to come. Now, Holmes just needs to catch Stapleton red-handed. He and Watson pretend to leave Baskerville Hall and that’s when Stapleton makes his move, sending his dog after Sir Henry.
As the dog leaps to attack Sir Henry, Holmes appears and shoots the beast. Knowing that his identity has already been revealed, Mr. Stapleton tries to flee the crime scene. But he was not gotten far when the swamps of Baskerville claim his life. With the Baskerville’s curse laid to rest, Holmes and Watson return home to await their next big case.
