Five thousand years ago, the Minoans flourished as one of the greatest European civilizations. They were a rich and powerful people living on what is now the Greek island of Crete. Their civilization was named after the mythical king Minos. In Greek mythology, Minos owns a great palace with a labyrinth where a bull-like monster feeds on humans.

At one time, the Minoans were the envy of the Mediterranean. They had a powerful navy and controlled a trade network that spanned from mainland Greece all the way to the coast of Spain, dealing in such valuable goods as tin, saffron, silver and gold.

The Minoans were the first civilization in Europe to develop drainage systems and paved roads. The construction of paved roads was made possible by their pioneering work with bronze. Saws fashioned from the metal were used to cut the stone blocks that made up the roads.

The Minoans were also known for their artistic achievements. Pottery was painted with scenes of magical gardens and fancifully dressed goddesses. Frescoes featuring scenes of religious rituals decorated their 300-chamber royal palace, Knossos, then the largest building in Europe. Judging from archeological finds, the Minoans had everything they needed. However, just when the Minoan civilization was at its peak, it mysteriously disappeared.

Recently-discovered evidence sheds light on the puzzling disappearance of the Minoan civilization. At a dig site near Knossos, the remains of five murdered children were found in a jar along with an edible snail. This alarming discovering indicates that the children might have been eaten. What could have caused the Minoans to act so savagely?

Researchers believe that Minoan civilization was destroyed by natural causes. 3,500 years ago, a volcano on the island of Thera, which lies 100 km north of Crete, had a massive eruption. Ash spewed into the sky and then fell. The eruption caused a huge tsunami. Twelve-meter high waves devastated Crete’s northern shore.

Along with the ash came clouds of deadly gas and droplets of sulfuric acid, blocking the sun’s rays. Afterwards, the Minoans would have had to endure a long period of declining harvests and famine.

The Minoans had believed that their rulers were able to control the forces of nature and communicate with the gods. However, the disasters most likely caused them to turn away from their rulers. As a result, the Minoan civilization collapsed, leading tochaos and unrest. People were driven to acts of desperation, including sacrificing their own children. When the mainland Greeks invaded, the Minoans went down without a fight.
