Each year during the third lunar month, Mazu mania hits Taiwan, as the island’s favorite goddess celebrates another birthday. In her honor, worshipers turn out for the annual Dajia Mazu pilgrimage, which lasts eight days and seven nights. Covering over 300 km, the pilgrimage sees a Mazu statue paraded from Chen Lan Temple in Dajia, Taichung County to the Fong Tian Temple in Xingang, and back again. Along the way, the statue visits over 60 temples.

Anticipation builds up in Dajia the night before, as the sound of drums, bells, and horns mixes with the crack of fireworks. The next morning, the procession sets off, consisting of pilgrimage teams led by an “informer.” Wearing a wide brimmed hat, big glasses, and only one straw shoe, the informer checks the road ahead and tells those waiting excitedly that Mazu is about to arrive.

The entire week is a time of great energy, and religious fever fills the air. Crowds line the streets and scramble to touch Mazu’s chair, as others fall to the ground hoping that they will be blessed by the goddess’s palanquin as it passes over their head. Free food is provided for the devoted followers along the way, and the main towns celebrate in style with a carnival atmosphere and traditional performances. With hundreds of thousands of worshipers joining the procession to bathe in Mazu’s protective powers, this is one of Taiwan’s biggest and liveliest parties!
