America is a country that is definitely in love with fast foods. The problem is ___1___ these foods are high in trans fats, which are linked to a host of health problems. In response, New York has become the first large American city to ___2___ its restaurants from serving food that contains trans fats. In addition, the Food and Drug Administration now requires food manufacturers to list trans fats on their labels.

Trans fats have been ___3___ for a while. At the turn of the 20thcentury, hydrogenated oils, which contain trans fats, were invented. They were a new, inexpensive product that could replace lard and other natural animal fats in cakes and cookies. They also have a longer shelf life than other fats and retain flavor well.
