Walk into any supermarket and you’ll see tons of brightly-colored packages of food calling to you from every aisle. Each package advertises that the product is low in fat, fortified with essential vitamins and minerals, and full of the latest, greatest nutrients, like Omega 3. This concept of separating nutrients ___1___ their original source and then pumping them into something else is referred to asnutritionism.”

1.

(A) into

(B) out

(C) from

(D) through

The origins of nutritionism go back to the late 1970s, when a U.S. Senate committee called on Americans to reduce saturated fat intake. Since then, invisible elements ___2___ nutrients have been gradually accepted by many people as the key to good health. Whole foods like apples, oranges and broccoli have lost their ___3___ to the more scientific nutrients listed on the outside of packages. In fact, to many folks, eating has become so scientific that they have to rely on experts to tell them what to eat.

2.

(A) are called

(B) have called

(C) have been called

(D) called

3.

(A) ability

(B) appeal

(C) interest

However, even the experts cannot make everything clear. A host of various factors, ___4___ scientific studies fail to take into account, affect how nutrients are processed by our bodies. Here is a shocking case in point. Beta carotene, a nutrient in fresh fruits and vegetables, helps protect us against cancer. ___5___, in one study, researchers found that when beta-carotene was isolated and made into supplements for people to swallow, it increased the risk of developing certain cancers!

4.

(A) many of which

(B) many which of

(C) of many which

(D) of which much

5.

(A) Similarly

(B) Meanwhile

(C) Noticeably

(D) Nevertheless

Perhaps we don’t need scientists to tell us ___6___ to eat, after all. Instead, the following are a few pieces of advice from Michael Pollan, the author of The Omnivores Dilemma:

1.      Don’t eat anything your great-great-grandmother ___7___ eat.

2.      Avoid food products containing ingredients that are unfamiliar or unpronounceable.

3.      Eat a wide variety of fresh whole foods, mostly plants, especially leaves.

6.

(A) when

(B) where

(C) what

(D) why

7.

(A) won’t

(B) wouldn’t

(C) will

(D) would
