When it comes to the end of the school year, students are busy trying to give their grades one last push. Most students wouldn’t waste time touching up blog entries or posting videos online during the week before finals. However, in one class at Parsons The New School for Design in New York, these activities are an integral part of the curriculum.

Jamie Wilkinson teaches a class on how to become “Internet Famous.” For artists and designers, learning to draw attention on the Internet can be an important skill for advertising and distributing one’s works. That’s why in the class, Wilkinson’s students’ grades are determined not by his opinion, but by how much attention their web pages can generate in the online community.

Students learn all the tricks of the trade, from seeking an audience through social networks to posting videos with suggestive titles. They have to be creative because they are competing with everyone else on the Internet. However, an eye-catching title is only half the battle. If you want real fame, you will need to provide quality content and be determined. “It’s still about putting feet to pavement, about going out there and making a million Myspace friends and developing a following,” Wilkinson says.
