A battle is brewing within the pages of the world’s largest online encyclopedia, Wikipedia. Two camps with different ideals are locked in a conflict over what content should be included on the site. On one side are the “inclusionists,” who believe anything and everything under the sun should be included in Wikipedia. Opposing them are the “deletionists,” who believe that Wikipedia needs to maintain a certain level of quality and relevance, and thus irrelevant articles should be excluded.

The inclusionists argue that, unlike traditional encyclopedias, Wikipedia has no reason to worry about space limits, as it is online. However, the deletionists believe that trivial entries compromise the seriousness of the project. So how can it be determined what is trivial, and what is relevant?

Now, in order to solve this problem, Wikipedia has created rules to decide what should be included. For example, something that has been mentioned in a reputable international journal has a better chance of being accepted than something that was only mentioned in a local newspaper. Likewise, something that can generate 100,000 hits on a Google search would be more likely to win a spot than something that generates 100.

A panel made of about 1,000 of Wikipedia’s most active contributors has been created to enforce the rules. Any panel member can nominate a new or pre-existing article for deletion and other panel members will decide the article’s fate.

If you submit something to Wikipedia and it is put up for deletion, don’t feel bad. Even the site’s founder, Jimmy Wales, has had an entry held up for inspection. After he created a short entry about a South African restaurant where he had enjoyed a meal, the entry was nominated for deletion because the restaurant was not considered notable enough. After a long debate, the article was kept.

Debates such as this can last for weeks and often become quite hostile. Many feel that Wikipedia is no longer a welcoming place for members, as deletionists will get rid of any entry that does not meet their standards. Recent statistics have shown that Wikipedia’s member activity is dropping and many members are leaving the site altogether. And yet, Wikipedia remains extremely popular with the public, trusted by millions worldwide as a convenient source of information. The direction they take could set the standard for online encyclopedias of the future.
