Do you ever catch yourself daydreaming about what your friends are doing? Twitter is yet another social networking website that makes use of instant messaging. You can use it to stay in contact with your family, friends or co-workers, sending up to 140 characters in each text-based message.
Twitter’s popularity arises from the fact that it is extremely simple to use. The entire idea revolves around just one question: what are you doing? At any time, users can send one-line updates that convey their moods, feelings and locations. The sender is able to limit delivery of these updates to their own circle of contacts.
The service has also proved useful for getting important information out during emergencies. The Los Angeles Fire Department used it in the fight against the California wildfires that broke out in October, 2007. Through Twitter, the firefighters were informed of the locations of many fires on a minute-by-minute basis.
Yet despite the buzz surrounding Twitter, critics believe it creates additional stress and promotes an unhealthy lifestyle of hyper-connectivity. Users may end up feeling chained to their keypads and becoming less connected to real social networks of living human beings.
