Waiting for Wang
“He’s coming along,” said New York Yankees’ general manager of Chien-ming Wang’s pesky injury. During running exercises on March 23rd, Wang pulled his right hamstring. He expected to be back on the mound within ten days, but the Yankees wouldn’t let Wang’s wishful thinking come true until he recovered fully.
As the runner-up in last year’s Cy Young Award, baseball’s most prestigious pitching award, Wang was eager to get back in the game and prove that last season was no fluke. After making 70 practice pitches following his accident, Wang was seen smiling. “I’m surprised, I feel good,” he said.
His accomplishments last season were excellent. He became known for his spectacular heavy sinker that baffled the major-league batters and produced many ground balls. His 19 wins were tied with Johan Santana’s for the most of any major-league pitcher.
The Man They Call Dice-K 叫做Dice-K的男人
On April 5th, the air was electric in Kansas City for Daisuke Matsuzaka’s first major-league appearance. The 26-year-old with the whopping US$103 million price tag took to the mound shortly after 2 p.m. ET. First came the windup, slow and deliberate, and then the release. His first pitch blasted over home plate, a 93 mile-an-hour fast ball that was fouled out.
Matsuzaka, or Dice-K as he is affectionately called, was all business from then on. This Japanese star pitcher struck out ten batters in seven innings and almost single-handedly won the game for the Red Sox. This is not bad for a first-timer on the major-league mound. In baseball terms, a “K” represents a strikeout. The day after Matsuzaka’s brilliant debut, reporters had a field day playing around with his nickname. Headlines read, “Dice-KKKKKKKKK!”
