France Looks to New Sarkozy Era

A new political era was born in France with the election of right-wing candidate Nicolas Sarkozy as the country’s new president. Mr. Sarkozy’s May 6th victory over Socialist opponent, Ségolène Royal, was a resounding one. Winning by 53% to 47% with a voter turnout of 85%, the new president has been given real authority, correspondents say.

Nonetheless, being a controversial figure, Sarkozy is not without adversaries. Upon hearing the results of the election, several hundred protesters threw bottles at police in the Place de la Bastille. Known for his tough stance on law and order, Sarkozy has not pleased everyone with his latest victory. Many are still not able to forget an infamous incident during the 2005 Paris riots when he referred to the protesters as “scum.”

An Encyclopedia for Life  生命百科全书

A description of every single species on earth will be included in a new project called the Encyclopedia of Life. Currently, the world’s scientists are attempting to compile videos, sound clips, maps, and other information about the 1.8 million known species around the globe. The project will eventually be put on one website and made available to everyone for free. It is expected to take 10 years to complete and should have enough pages of information to stretch around the world twice.

According to the biologist Cristian Samper, the project will open new worlds of research. “Research papers that used to be limited to northern science libraries will be easily accessible in remote Botswana,” he said. “The democracy of science can’t be overemphasized,” he added.
