A report issued by 400 experts working for UNESCO is calling for agricultural reform in order to curb food shortages and avoid a global disaster. Around the world, food prices have been increasing in recent years, leaving people in the poorest nations unable to feed themselves.
UNESCO says that increasing food prices are due in part to the rise in the price of oil, which makes it more expensive to fuel farm machinery and to transport food around the world. Therefore, according to Guihem Calvo, one of the UNESCO experts, “We must develop agriculture less dependent on fossil fuels, that favors the use of locally available resources ….” The report also encourages farmers to take a more natural approach to farming, using crop rotation and organic fertilizer.
Food prices, in general, have risen by 83 percent over the past three years. In the past few months, this drastic increase in prices has sparked protests in places such as Haiti, Egypt, Thailand and Italy. These protests have at times turned violent, leading to loss of life as people become more desperate.
