Poisoned Milk Scandal Endangers Young Children  毒奶危害幼童健康

Amid concern about a poisoned milk scandal, over a dozen countries have banned Chinese dairy products. The contaminated milk has already led to the deaths of four Chinese babies and sickened about 54,000 others. Fears are running high in Asia, where anxious parents have rushed to hospitals to have their children checked.

The industrial chemical, melamine, has been found in the infant formula and milk products of 22 Chinese companies. Melamine is used to make plastics and fertilizer. However, dishonest dairy manufacturers added it to watered-down milk so that the milk appeared to have more protein. Consuming high levels of this chemical can cause kidney stones. This recent health scare has further damaged China’s safety record.

A local Taiwanese film has recently conquered the island, racking up profits as big as those of Hollywood and Chinese blockbusters. Since it was first released in Taiwan, the romance “Cape No.7” has earned over NT$400 million at the box office. That rivals the profits of “The Lost World: Jurassic Park,” which made NT$420 million.

The story revolves around the rise of a rock band in HengchunTownship, Pingtung County. Some critics say that the movie could mark a turning point in Taiwanese cinema. Earlier domestic films were known for being slow and contemplative. In contrast, “Cape No.7” is funnier and more accessible, making it easier for audiences to relate to.
