Government Issues Special Vouchers to Boost Economy
As the global financial storm gathered pace, authorities around the world adopted urgent measures to try to boost their struggling economies. In Taiwan, the government came up with a plan to distribute shopping vouchers worth around NT$86 billion to the island’s more than 23 million people.
Last December, the government gave the go-ahead for the plan, and in January 2009, handed out NT$3,600 in vouchers to every Taiwanese citizen, including children and babies, in an effort to give a lift to the faltering domestic economy. The vouchers, which are protected by advanced security measures, will be exchangeable for goods and services just like cash.
Lighting Up Just Got Harder
In previous years, it was only forbidden to smoke in public places such as schools or on public transportation. In January, however, the government stepped up a no-smoking campaign by intensifying restriction on where it is permissible to light up.
Under new rules, smokers have been banned from having a puff in indoor areas where there are more than three people. It is also now illegal to smoke at large outdoor gatherings such as the New Year celebrations at Taipei 101. Those needing their nicotine fix may find it easier to give up their habit rather than risk fines of up to NT$10,000 for violating these rules.
