Forty years ago, on July 20th, 1969, American astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped down from his lunar lander onto the moon and uttered the now immortal words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” As Armstrong took his momentous step, becoming the first person on the moon, grainy black-and-white footage was beamed live from the lunar surface. A worldwide audience of 600 million watched in awe as history was made. The Apollo 11 mission to land a man on the moon inspired countless dreams and pioneered a host of indispensable technologies. These include everything from the computer chip to freeze-dried food and memory foam. At a 40th-anniversary celebration of the moon landing, U.S. President Obama, who watched the live broadcast as a child, saluted the Apollo 11 astronauts as “genuine American heroes.” Stargazers are now looking toward 2020, the year by which the U.S. space agency, NASA, hopes to return astronauts to the moon.

Leading software maker Microsoft is set to release Windows 7, the newest version of its Microsoft Windows operating system, on October 22nd. Only two years ago, Microsoft put out Windows Vista to much fanfare, but the Windows XP-update was blasted for being bloated and slow. Many people and companies simply refused to upgrade and continued using Windows XP, forcing Microsoft to extend support for that system. With Windows 7, Microsoft has learned its lessons and, hoping finally to lure customers to upgrade, has come up with a much faster and sleeker package. The wealth of new features included in Windows 7 has been getting technology fans excited. They include advanced touchscreen support, a new “super” taskbar, and innovative window controls. But aside from new functions, other factors, such as pricing and reliability, will be key in deciding whether Windows 7 becomes a success or merely another expensive mistake.
