Miracle on the Hudson 哈德逊河上的奇迹
In January, a large jet was forced to make a dramatic crash-landing into the Hudson River in New York City, after a collision with a flock of birds wrecked both the plane’s engines. Miraculously, no one was seriously hurt, and the plane stayed afloat long enough for rescuers to safely evacuate everyone. However, many of the plane’s passengers were treated for hypothermia, after having waited in the icy water for help to arrive.

It might sound unlikely, but planes are quite vulnerable to being struck by birds, especially during take-off. Over the years, “bird strikes” have caused numerous accidents. Nowadays, air traffic controllers warn pilots who are about to take off if they see birds in the area.

Esteemed Buddhist Leader Die Aged 79 一代宗师圣严法师圆寂
Buddhist Master Sheng Yen, one of Taiwan’s foremost religious leaders, passed away on February 3rd, 2009 at the age of 79. The founder of the Dharma Drum Mountain devoted his life to promoting Buddhist teachings. He died of kidney failure after several years of illness.
佛教圣严法师，台湾重要的宗教领导人之一，于2009年2月3日圆寂，享寿79岁。这位法鼓山基金会创办者终其一生提倡佛教教义。疾病缠身多年后，圣严法师因肾脏衰竭而与世长辞。
Master Sheng Yen became a monk at the age of 13 in China and came to Taiwan six years later. In 1969, he traveled to Japan to study for a doctorate in Buddhist Studies, despite only having achieved a fourth-grade education.Vowing to bring Buddhist teachings to a wider audience, he set up educational and cultural institutions, wrote dozens of books, and gave lectures around the world. His message of the importance of education will live on through his many remarkable achievements.
圣严法师13岁在中国出家，6年后来到台湾。尽管之前仅受过4年国小教育，他于1969年负笈日本攻读佛学博士。圣严法师发愿推广佛教教义，他成立许多教育、文化机构，出版众多书籍，并且到全世界各地演讲。他一再强调教育的重要性，这点将会同他许多伟大成就一样长存人间。
