The hit movie “Slumdog Millionaire” swept to Oscar glory at the 81st Academy Awards this year. In all, the film took home eight of the cherished golden statues, including wins for Best Picture and Best Director.

“Slumdog Millionaire’s” incredible Oscar performance was all the more impressive because the film was almost denied a release in theaters. Fortunately, it escaped this fate and went on to enchant audiences around the world.

Parts of the movie were shot in the slums of the Indian city of Mumbai. As the cast and crew of “Slumdog Millionaire” celebrated on Oscar night, Mumbai inhabitants were also overjoyed. The film’s achievement, like the rags-to-riches tale it portrays, is certainly inspirational no matter you come from.

As the world’s economic woes continue, it seems that no industry is safe. Recently, a string of major U.S. newspapers, including The New York Times, have been getting into financial hot water. Much of the blame has been placed on falling advertising profits, with the rise of online news singled out as a major contributing factor. Newspapers have found it increasingly hard to compete with the Internet, which provides free and instant access to news stories as they break.

Some newspapers have been even filed for bankruptcy protection. Under this legal process, companies are allowed to reorganize their debts, making it easier for them to pay back what they owe. With no improvement in the economy in sight, U.S. newspapers might have to prepare themselves for more bad news to come.
