Each year, TIME magazine compiles a list of the world’s 100 most influential people. Powerful world leaders, famous celebrities, and glamorous film stars have all graced the list. The magazine also conducts an Internet poll to find out who its online readers think are the most influential people. In past years, this poll has given some unusual results. This year was no exception when Christopher Poole, a virtually unknown Canadian college student and founder of an online community, came out on top. It is suspected that he was catapulted to the list’s summit by hacking the results, a charge he denies. Whatever the truth, it just goes to show how easily the Internet can be manipulated.

Taiwan Attends World Health Assembly 台湾参与世界卫生大会
In May, Taiwan attended a meeting of the World Health Assembly (WHA) for the first time in more than three decades. The WHA is the governing body of the World Health Organization (WHO), an organization concerned with international public health. At the important conference, vital health issues such as how to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, like the H1N1 virus, were discussed. Decisions affecting the policies and work of the WHO were also made. Taiwan was only granted observer status at the key health forum, which meant that Taiwan’s representatives could speak but were not allowed to vote in any decisions. However, Taiwan’s observer status will allow it to better deal with international health issues in the future.
