Paper-thin Speakers Win Wall Street Journal Prize 超薄纸喇叭获科技创新奖
Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) was announced as the winner in the consumer electronics category of the Wall Street Journal’s prestigious 2009 Technology Innovation Awards at a ceremony in San Francisco. ITRI received the honor for its groundbreaking FleXpeaker, beating off competition from industry leaders such as HP and Motorola. The paper-thin, flexible loudspeaker is made from clusters of tiny bendable speakers that can be arranged to create a speaker system of nearly any size. The cutting-edge technology and ingenious design make the ITRI award-winner the slimmest, most lightweight speaker in the world. Extremely adaptable – the sheet of speakers can be cut into shapes with scissors – there is already a multitude of potential uses for the energy-efficient FleXpeaker. Though the revolutionary product has yet to make it to the market, consumers can expect to see it used in car stereos, flat-screen TVs, cell phones, and billboards in the future.

Women celebrated 2009 as a year of unprecedented achievement in the history of the Nobel Prize as they claimed a record-breaking five awards. Elinor Ostrom topped off the occasion by becoming the first woman ever to win the Nobel Prize in economics. Only 40 females have been recognized by the Nobel committees, including the renowned scientist Marie Curie in 1903 and again in 1911. Meanwhile, Shanghai-born Charles Kao, an academician of Taiwan’s Academia Sinica, was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics. He received the distinction for his work in the field of fiber optic communications, which revolutionized the way telephone, Internet, and television signals are transmitted. The real talking point, though, had to be U.S. President Barack Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel Foundation said it was acknowledging Obama for his attempts to strengthen global diplomacy. But many found the decision controversial and said it was much too early in Obama’s presidency to make him a Nobel laureate.
