China Bows to U.S. Pressure on Yuan
U.S. President Barack Obama is not the only one welcoming China’s promise to allow the yuan to be a more flexible currency. China has pegged the yuan against the dollar since July 2008. As a result, many say the Chinese currency is undervalued – held at an artificially low level – giving China an unfair economic advantage. The U.S., in particular, has been demanding China reform its currency, saying that Chinese exporters have greatly benefited from the low yuan.
A flexible yuan would surely yield some advantages. Manufacturers in other countries would find it easier to compete with Chinese imports. And nations that rely on exporting, like Germany and Taiwan, will no longer be at a disadvantage. Companies that export to China should also sell more products, as the yuan price of their goods goes down. And finally, Chinese customers themselves should benefit from lower price tags on foreign products.
NASA Predicts Space Storm, Possible Devastation
NASA is warning that a space storm could cause massive destruction when it hits our planet in or around 2013. The space agency’s scientists say that the sun will soon be waking up from a deep sleep, reaching a peak in its magnetic energy cycle as well as reaching its maximum number of sunspots. The result of this could be like “a bolt of lightning” hitting the earth, NASA says.
The reason that such a storm could be so destructive is related to our high dependence on technology. Solar flares have hit Earth before, but experts are worried because the enormous levels of magnetic energy would play havoc with everything from iPods to banking systems. In fact, some countries in Europe could be left in darkness as power grids overheat, air travel could be disrupted, hospital equipment could be affected, and electronic devices could cease to function. NASA is just hoping that governments take heed and prepare themselves.
