More Than 30 Nations to Join in Flora Fun  台北花博逾30国共襄盛举

The long-awaited Taipei International Flora Exposition is just around the corner, and with more and more nations getting involved, it really will have an “international” feel. As of the beginning of July, 31 countries had confirmed their participation in the expo. Foreign nations will bring their own flavor to the six-month event. For instance, the Dutch will show their eco-friendly gardens, while Greece will exhibit its imitation ancient relics. There will be a whole world of horticulture for visitors to feast their eyes on.

令人期待已久的台北国际花卉博览会即将登场。随着越来越多的国家参展，今年的台北花博会真的是国际的盛会。七月初时，有31个国家确定参与此次展览会。这些国家将为这个长达六个月的盛会添上他们独一无二的元素。像是荷兰将会展出不造成生态环境损害的花园，而希腊将展出古文物的仿制品。届时将有全世界的园艺设计让参观者大饱眼福。

Participating nations will showcase their displays at the Fine Arts Park Area. There, the newly-built Expo Hall, which seats 1,200 people, will host the opening and closing ceremonies. Across the road, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum will be staging shows, and the venue will also be used by Taiwanese and international artists who will give lectures and seminars and run Flora Expo activities.

Anthropologist’s Quest to Save Inuit Language  人类学家拯救因纽特语的长征

When Cambridge University anthropological linguist Stephen Pax Leonard realized how close a small Inuit community in Greenland is to losing its home, traditions, and language, he couldn’t sit back and do nothing. Instead, he booked flights to Greenland and made arrangements to live among the Inughuit for a year, documenting and recording their language, a pure Inuit dialect called Inuktun.

当剑桥大学的人类语言学家史蒂芬．罗讷德意识到格林兰岛上一小群的因纽特人即将失去他们的家乡、传统跟语言时，他无法袖手旁观什么也不做。他反而订了前往格林兰岛的机票并安排要跟这群因纽特人同住一年，记载并且录下他们的语言：－纯正的因纽特方言Inuktun。

Due to global warming, the Inughuit will be forced to move from their northwest Greenland home within the next 15 years. They will join the wider society, and their unique culture and ancient language will disappear. To prevent this from happening, Leonard will observe, study, and record Inughuit behavior and communication. With a bit of luck, Inuktun will be preserved.

Arctic life won’t be easy for Leonard. With temperatures as low as -40^oC, a sun that sets for six months of the year, and the need to hunt sea mammals for food, it’ll be a far cry from Cambridge.

但北极的生活对罗讷德来说可不容易。当地气温只有摄氏负40度，一年里有六个月是长夜，还必须猎杀海中的哺乳动物作为食物，这跟剑桥大学的环境可说是大大的不同。
