Finance Ministry Plans E-Receipts for Invoice Lottery
Some people love the receipt lottery, eagerly collecting every receipt they can get their hands on. Others refuse to play, having spent too many hours trawling through hundreds of receipts, never to win a cent. However, the latter group might reconsider sitting out the game once the Ministry of Finance introduces the “e-receipt” program and increases the prize money. The ministry says the new system means people will no longer need to be issued paper receipts. When a customer makes a purchase using an IC chip card, such as the Easycard, the information will be stored at the Financial Data Center. When the lottery numbers are announced, the system will check everyone’s data and send texts or emails to the lucky winners. Furthermore, overall prize money could be increased in 2011, and talks about introducing a NT$10 million jackpot are underway, too. Whatever happens, it looks like playing the receipt lotto is about to get easier.
Graphene Scientists Win Nobel Prizes
Two scientists have been awarded the Nobel Prize for physics in recognition of their work developing a revolutionary material called graphene. Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov, of Manchester University, England, extracted graphene – the thinnest, strongest material ever discovered – from pencil lead, or graphite. Sheets of graphene are one-layer thick, closely arranged carbon atoms. Graphene conducts electricity, and is flexible and easily manipulated. Therefore, it has many potential uses in touch screen technology, solar cells, and as a replacement for silicon transistors in computers. Graphene transistors could also increase the speed of our computers many hundreds of times. Despite the scientific community’s excitement over graphene, the prize-winning researchers remain humble. When asked about the award, Professor Geim said it would not affect him or his work, telling journalists that he would “muddle on as before.”
