Taiwan Monitors Radiation Levels in Wake of Japan Crisis

Taiwan reacted to Japan’s Fukushima nuclear reactor crisis by introducing and increasing nuclear safety measures. At the country’s international airports, military staff monitored incoming passengers for radiation contamination. Elsewhere, soldiers were trained in how to remove radioactive particles from people’s attire. Japanese fresh and processed food products were also undergoing tests for radioactivity. In further precautionary measures, the Bureau of Standards, Metrology, and Inspection began to monitor radiation levels on non-consumable goods. The 912 products include furniture, children’s toys, lighting equipment, and consumer electronics. Any of these commodities containing more than 0.2 microsieverts of radiation per hour would be prevented from entering the country. Meanwhile, officials continued to monitor radiation levels at observation stations around Taiwan.

Knut the Polar Bear Dies, Aged Four

Berlin Zoo’s star inhabitant, a four-year-old polar bear named Knut, passed away on March 19th. Outpourings of grief came immediately, reflecting how popular Knut was throughout his short life. When Knut died in his enclosure, hundreds of people were looking onVisibly upset, zookeepers fenced off the compound, unable to explain what caused the unexpected tragedy. Initial tests seemed to suggest Knut died of brain damage. Knut’s life was tragic from the start which, in turn, endeared him to millions of people across the globe. When he was born, his mother rejected him, and his twin brother died just after a couple of days. However, Knut seemed to thrive under the care of a dedicated zookeeper, Thomas Doerflein. The loss of Knut has sparked criticism from some animal rights groups, who argue that it is unnatural to keep wild animals on small zoo enclosures. Polar bears usually live to be about 20 years old, so Knut’s premature death has brought animal captivity back into spotlight.
