Derailed Train in Alishan Causes Great Damage

In April, five people died and eighty-four were injured when a train packed with Chinese tourists was derailed in Alishan. The accident was caused when a falling branch from an oak tree landed on the last car of the train.

President Ma expressed sorrow over the incident and offered his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. As compensation for their loss, the beneficiaries may be entitled to receive more than NT$6 million from liability insurance and government funds. To prevent similar accidents from occurring in the future, the Taiwanese government has called for a review of railway safety inspection policies. Across the strait, Chinese officials have stated that they expect Taiwan to improve security in this area. Taiwan officials hope this incident will not discourage Chinese tourists from visiting Alishan, as a new policy allowing Chinese citizens to visit the island without tour groups is set to come into effect soon.

American South Devastated by Tornados

In April, the American South was dealt a devastating blow by Mother Nature when 297 tornados battered states across the region, breaking a 36-year-old record for most tornados in a month. Hundreds were killed and thousands were injured in the terrible catastrophe, and an undetermined number of people were left homeless. President Obama toured the area to personally assess the damage, pledging that the federal government would lend its assistance. National Guard troops were deployed to search for survivors, aid in the cleanup, and collect the dead.

Once the storms were over, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the branch of the federal government responsible for dealing with natural disasters in the U.S., sprang into action. Food, water, generators, and temporary shelters were distributed, and individuals whose homes or businesses were damaged or destroyed were able to apply to receive financial aid. Medical personnel, search and rescue teams, and cleanup crews were also dispatched by FEMA to help in the recovery aid.
