In May, trouble was brewing in Taiwan’s food industry, as a toxic chemical known as DEHP was found in several Taiwanese food products. If consumed, DEHP is thought to cause cancer. As a result, the discovery of DEHP in food products set off a wave of panic. Convenience stores refused to sell potentially contaminated items, and food companies were forced to destroy large amounts of their products.
今年五月，台湾食品产业有麻烦正酝酿着，因为在台湾生产的数种食品中被测出一种称为DEHP的有毒化学物质。一般认为DEHP会致癌。结果，在食品中含有DEHP的发现掀起了一股恐慌。便利商店拒绝出售可能被污染的商品，而食品公司则被迫销毁大量的产品。
According to investigations, one of the businesses responsible for the DEHP contamination appears to be Yu Sheng Chemical Company. Yu Seng had been selling the chemical that was found to contain DEHP for five years, with over 300 tons sold in Taiwan and overseas.
根据调查，须为这次DEHP污染事件负责的其中一家公司似乎是昱伸化工公司。在五年里，昱伸已经在台湾和海外卖300多吨被发现含有DEHP的化学物质。
Yu Seng Chemical Company supplies chemicals and ingredients to many of Taiwan’s food companies. In fact, 49 out of 168 Taiwanese food companies purchased the DEHP-containing ingredient from Yu Sheng, including several big names, such as government-owned Taiwan Sugar Company and the Possmei Corporation, which exports food products to more than 20 countries.
昱伸化工公司供应化学物质和原料给多家台湾食品公司。事实上，台湾168家食品公司中，就有49家从昱伸购买了含有DEHP成分的原料，其中包括一些大厂牌的食品公司，如公营的台糖公司和出口食品到20多国的伯思美国际实业有限公司。
Government officials and businesses expressed concern that this crisis will damage the reputation of Taiwan-manufactured products. To help combat this problem, the Department of Health has called on SGS to provide professional food testing services. Once a product passes SGS testing, it will be allowed back on the shelves. Hopefully, faith in Taiwan’s food industry will soon be restored.
自政府官员和企业界对于这场将损害台制产品声誉的危机表达关切。为有助于解决此一问题，卫生署要求SGS（台湾检验科技公司）提供专业的食品检测服务。产品一旦通过SGS的测试后，就能回到架上贩卖。希望人们对台湾食品产业的信心将很快恢复。
