Taiwanese Fighter Jets Crash  台湾战机失事

Two Taiwanese fighter jets crashed in separate incidents in the mountains near Yilan on September 13th. The Ministry of National Defense reported that the aircraft, an RF-5 spy plane and a two-seater F-5F training plane, had taken off from an airbase in Hualian at 7:39 PM and vanished from radar within minutes.

According to local witnesses, the two planes passed low overhead and there was a very loud bang, followed by a mountainside fireball. Shortly thereafter, debris from the planes was discovered along the Suhua Highway. Search-and-rescue teams and hundreds of soldiers were quickly dispatched to the area. The crash site was found and the remains of the three pilots were recovered the following day.

The cause of the crash wasn’t immediately clear, though Air Force officials confirmed that the planes had passed safety inspections and ruled out mechanical failure. An investigation is now underway, and until it is completed the rest of Taiwan’s F5 fighter planes remain grounded.

Serious Quake Strikes India  强震袭击印度

Several dozen people were killed and many others were injured in a strong earthquake that struck northeastern India, Nepal, and Tibet at 6:10 PM local time on September 18th. The epicenter of the 6.9 magnitude quake was in Sikkim state of India, where 18 people were initially confirmed dead. Several people were also killed in Nepal, including three passersby who were crushed when a wall of the British Embassy in Katmandu collapsed, and at least seven more died in Tibet, according to China’s official Xinhua News Agency. The death toll is likely to increase, however, as rescuers reach more remote mountain areas.

Relief efforts have been slowed by heavy rain and thick clouds, as well as widespread landslides, which blocked major roads and disrupted power and communications across the region. Because of the weather and terrain, the full extent of the damage is difficult to determine, and recovery will not be quick. The area experiences earthquakes quite frequently, though such heavy ones are rare.

救灾任务受到大雨、浓厚的云层还有大规模山崩的影响而慢下来，山崩阻断了主要道路，同时中断了整个地区的电力与通讯。因为气候和地形的关系，整体损失很难估计，而且将无法很快复原。虽然这个地区经常发生地震，但是如此强大的地震也很罕见。
