In a shocking medical disaster, doctors at Taiwan’s prestigious National Taiwan University (NTU) Hospital and National Cheng Kung University Hospital have likely infected five patients with the HIV virus because of a clerical error made by the hospital’s transplant department. The tragedy occurred when the department failed to identify that one of its organ donors had tested positive for HIV. As a result, five patients who received organs from this donor have a 90% chance of contracting the disease.
The organs used for these transplants were harvested from a 37-year-old donor named Chiu, who died in an accident. NTU Hospital has already admitted that its employees did not follow standard operating procedures, as they failed to double-check the test results with the hospital’s computer system. The department’s coordinator claims he confused the words “reactive” and “non-reactive” while listening to the results over the phone.
Taiwan’s Department of Health (DOH) has vowed to take swift action to prevent errors like this from occurring again. The DOH will examine specifically how and why NTU Hospital made such a grave mistake before taking disciplinary action against the institution. The two hospitals were each fined NT$150,000. In addition, the doctors who were involved may also face potential medical suspensions. However many people feel these penalties don’t go far enough. They believe those responsible should receive much greater punishment for potentially destroying the lives of five innocent people and their families.
