Whether he’s trying to save the world from alien annihilation, helping hopeless romantics get a date with the girl of their dreams, or flying haphazardly across the silver screen as a drunken superhero, Will Smith always seems to have a powerful and charismatic presence on screen. And given his simple but effective philosophy of “I can do it,” it’s no wonder he has become a one-man entertainment empire and made it to the top of the Hollywood pile.

Smith was born in September 1968 in Philadelphia to a middle-class family. From his father, Smith learned the value of hard work, and his well-educated mother passed on to him the importance of knowledge. Growing up in a racially mixed neighborhood, Smith developed into an open-minded young man, accepting of all people.

By the time he was 20, Smith already had a Grammy under his belt for his album He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper.

Where did Smith get the motivation to work so hard to reach the top? It actually goes back to when he was 16 and his first girlfriend cheated on him. At that point, he made up his mind that he would “never not be good enough again.” He has since turned his undeniable sense of determination into starring roles in a series of hit films.

Gardner was a salesman who risked everything to become a stockbroker to make a better life for his son, and even wound up homeless for a time. Smith, who acted in the film alongside his son in real life, Jaden Smith, won an Academy Award nomination for his outstanding performance.
