In this age of globalization, it’s common to see people of all races, religions, and creeds in Taiwan. But in its entire history, few foreigners have had a bigger impact on Taiwan than George Leslie Mackay.

Mackay was a Canadian missionary who was sent to Asia in the late 19th century. His early travels led him to Hong Kong, China, and Japan. But when Mackay set foot in Kaohsiung in 1871, he felt as if he had received a divine message. Mackay would later recall, “I was pulled by an invisible string to an unknown place. But when that beautiful view of the green mountains on the island came to me, all was clear that this is where my life would be.” Later, when Mackay discovered that there were no missionaries working in northern Taiwan, he decided to relocate to Tamsui.

Unlike other missionaries who were solely interested in spreading their own beliefs, Mackay took a keen interest in all things Taiwanese and aimed to accumulate an encyclopedic knowledge of Taiwanese culture. But life abroad would prove to be difficult for Mackay. At that time, few of Taiwan’s people had come in contact with foreigners, so they were extremely suspicious of Mackay. Many people laughed at his sermons and his strange accent. Some even threw stones and raw eggs at him as he walked down the street. Still, Mackay refused to relent and he eventually learned to speak Taiwanese fluently. Over time, the people in Taiwan began to take a liking to the strange foreigner with the long black beard.

After winning the trust and respect of the locals, Mackay started to attract followers to Christianity. In the following years, he would establish several institutions, including schools, hospitals, and churches that improved the lives of Taiwanese. In 1880, he opened his own clinic to provide modern dental care to the lowland aborigines. It’s reported that he personally pulled over 10,000 teeth and baptized more than 3,000 people over the years.

在马偕总算得到当地人的信赖与尊敬之后，他开始吸引基督教的追随者。接下来几年间，他创立了许多机构，包括学校、医院以及教堂，让台湾人民的生活更加完善。1880年他开了一间诊所，提供平地原住民现代化的牙医护理。根据记载，他几年下来亲自拔了超过一万颗牙齿，并且为三千多人受洗。

Quite possibly, Mackay’s most noteworthy achievement was helping to create a written form for the Taiwanese language. He and his colleagues helped to transcribe Taiwanese phonetically by using Latin characters. In his personal life, Mackay stirred up some controversy when he chose to marry a Taiwanese woman. In those days, interracial marriages were considered taboo. But Mackay and his wife would prove the naysayers wrong and go on to have a happy marriage with three children. In 1901, after 30 years of service to Taiwan, Mackay passed away from throat cancer. In the years following his death, Mackay’s legend has only grown greater.

For those who want to learn more about Mackay’s experiences in Taiwan, his book From Far Formosa is an excellent resource. It gives readers a peek at what life and society were like in Taiwan during the late 19th century. In 2008, the Taiwanese government funded a production which paid homage to Mackay’s extraordinary life: a Taiwanese-English opera entitled Mackay: The Black Bearded Bible Man. It was a fitting tribute to a selfless man who dedicated his life to Taiwan.

马偕的著作《福尔摩莎：马偕台湾回忆录》让对马偕有兴趣的人有机会可以更了解他在台的经历。这本书让读者能一窥19世纪晚期的台湾社会和生活型态。2008年时，为了向如此不凡的马偕致敬，台湾政府出资制作一出名为《福尔摩莎信简：黑须马偕》的台英双语歌剧。这出歌剧对于这位一生都奉献给台湾的无私的人来说是非常实至名归的荣耀。
