The universe’s worst singer has been discovered. It lives in the heart of the Perseus Galaxy Cluster, and it’s been ___1___ out the same note for 2.5 billion years. The “vocalist” is a gigantic black hole. Scientists claim that the note, more than fifty octaves below middle C, is a B flat.

1.

(A) belt

(B) belting

(C) belted

(D) belts

You may think it’s strange that a black hole can ___2___ noise. We’ve always been told that nothing, not even sound, is supposed to escape a black hole. In fact, a small amount of matter does ___3___ being sucked into black holes. This matter exists in the “rings” that black holes create around them as they draw matter in.

2.

(A) take off

(B) lay out

(C) set out

(D) give off

3.

(A) avoid

(B) deny

(C) merit

(D) imagine

When huge amounts of pressure accumulate, some of this matter ___4___ from the black hole at an extremely high speed. The matter collides with galactic gas, producing noise in the same way that a drumstick does ___5___ hitting a drum.

4.

(B) expelled

(C) is expelled

(D) is expelling

(A) as

(B) when

(C) because

(D) since

Although scientists cannot directly hear sound through the vacuum of space, they are still able to observe vibrating matter and ___6___ corresponding sound by using x-rays. In fact, scientists are finding that the universe is full of cosmic sounds. They’ve ___7___ detected echoes of the big bang traveling through space. That’s a discovery that’s sure to make waves!

6.

(A) their

(B) there’s

(C) its
