Who says science has to be boring? The Ig Nobel Prize was created to honor scientists ___1___ research “first makes people laugh, and then makes them think.” The event is a parody of the Nobel Prize, ___2___ the name also being a play on the word“ ignoble,” which means low, offensive, or not noble in character.

For example, Japanese researchers have been awarded for successfully extracting vanilla from, of all things, cow dung! An American student has also received an Ig Nobel for her painstaking research into the famous “5-second rule” – whether or not food that you drop on the floor is still safe to eat if ___5___ within 5 seconds. Even Taiwan is on the honor roll, ___6___ a team of chemists who did the world the service of proving that Cola is not an effective spermicide!

Although these “ignoble ” over-achievers may never draw comparisons to Einstein or Newton, their contributions introduce us to the sillier side of science. If it weren’t for the Ig Nobels, these unusual feats would likely go ___7___. And we would be deprived of a laugh!
