A long, sharp whistle cut through the icy mountain air and we knew that, at last, our ride had come. We watched as the steam engine slowly, gracefully chugged into view, before pulling smoothly into the remote train station,

一道尖锐的长哨声划破山区冷冽的空气；我们知道，火车终于来了。我们看着蒸气火车头缓慢、优雅地驶入眼帘，然后平稳地开进这偏远的火车站。

Technicians in blue overalls checked every gear and valve in the old machine before approving it for another run. The train was an antique, but it was excellently maintained, and brightly painted with the Argentinian flag on its front. We climbed into the comfortable cabins, and with a hiss and a jerk the train set out for its destination: Tierra del Fuego National Park.

Lying on the southernmost tip of Argentina, Tierra del Fuego is a place of haunting beauty. The snowcapped mountains of the Andes provide a magnificent backdrop to the clean, cold rivers and the thick forests.

位于阿根廷最南端的「火地岛」，美得令人难忘。雄伟的安地斯山脉白雪皑皑，衬托着清澈冰凉的河水与茂密森林。

The train chugged across the beautiful landscape. Dense steam poured from the locomotive. After about an hour, we pulled into our destination and were left to explore the park. My traveling companions, a friendly Frenchman and a young flight attendant from Taipei, were eager for a better view of the park. We selected a trail that led us to a high plateau with a stunning view of the surrounding lakes and mountains.

火车穿越美景，车头冒出浓浓的蒸气。约一小时后，我们抵达目的地，下车探索这座国家公园。我的旅伴是一位友善的法国人和一位来自台北的年轻空服员，他们都急却找个能欣赏公园美景的好地点。我们挑了一条通往高地的小径，高地四周环绕着令人惊艳的山、湖景致。

Setting out along the path, I felt refreshed by the cold air within my lungs. We followed the path next to a running river and found it emptied into a wide marsh. The cause of this strange phenomenon was a large, beautifully-constructed beaver dam.

我们沿着小径出发，呼吸冰凉的空气令我精神一振。顺着河边的小径走，我们发现这条河注入一片广阔湿地。此奇特现象是因海狸在此构筑了一个美丽大坝。

The soft, wet earth sucked against our boots as we trudged through. They made loud slurping sounds with every step. The exertion of climbing was lessened by the pure joy of being somewhere so pristine. But soon we were faced with a dilemma. A fork in the trail, with two possible paths we could take.

我们踩在湿软的泥土上，步履艰难地走着。每踏一步，靴子就大声发出踩烂泥巴的声音。身处如此原始之地，我们感到全然的喜悦，费力攀爬之苦也随之减少。但很快我们就陷入两难：小径上有两条可行的岔路。

Nearby I saw a large tree. I climbed up for a better view of the way ahead. Noting that one trail ultimately led up while the other would take us back down, we chose to ascend. Higher and higher we climbed until we finally broke through a last layer of bushes and came upon a clearing. Spread out in front of us was a spectacular view: a placid lake on one side and breathtaking mountains on the other. I raised my exhausted arms to fully take in this amazing scene.

我看到附近有棵大树，便爬上去查看前方的路。其中一条最后通往高处，另一条则会带我们往回走下山；我们选择登高。大家越爬越高，直到终于穿越最后一层树丛，来到一块空地为止。壮丽景色在我们眼前展开：一边是宁静的湖泊，一边是美得令人屏息的山脉。我举起疲劳的双臂，饱览这惊人美景。

We were surrounded on all sides by the wonder of nature. The Frenchman wandered to a secluded spot to rest. My Taiwanese companion was far more interested in making the most of this photo opportunity.

天然奇景从四面八方将我们包围。我的法国同伴漫步到隐僻处休息，台湾同伴则把握机会尽情拍照。

After taking time to rest and enjoy the scene, we decided it was time to go, and followed the path to its end. But this proved to be easier said than done. The way going up had been clear, but as we descended, we found the trail growing less and less distinct. The woods grew thicker. Charming grass meadows were replaced with rotten tree trunks. The sun began to set, creating a growing darkness. We grew less and less certain that we were heading in the right direction.

休息完毕，也欣赏完美景之后，我们决定该上路了，于是沿着小径走到尽头。但说来容易，做起来可不轻松。登高之路原本一目了然，但往下走时，却发现路径越来越不清楚，树林越来越茂密，迷人草原也被腐朽树干取代。太阳西下，天色渐暗，我们越来越不确定方向是否正确。

The path that we had been following finally ended in a thick clump of brush, and we had to admit we were lost. We hurried on regardless of our lack of direction, struggling to find something, anything that might lead us back before night fell.

我们走的路径止于一丛浓密灌木林，我们必须承认迷路了。尽管迷失方向，我们仍继续赶路，努力在天黑前找出一条能带我们回去的路。

Suddenly, I caught a glimpse of light in the distance. Jumping over a tree trunk, I saw a sight that made my heart leap. It was a road sign, and with it a road. Emerging through the brush, we found that we were only a hundred meters from the station, and just in time for the last train. It had been an incredible day, but I was happy to be heading home.
