A few years ago, the American president announced that he considered Iraq, Iran, and North Korea to be the worst countries on the plant. He called them the Axis of Evil, and to many, they seemed to be places of darkness and danger. However, to Tony Wheeler, the co-creator of the Lonely Planet travel guides, they made for an excellent travel itinerary. In his new book Bad Lands, Tony Wheeler describes his recent travels in the most feared countries on Earth.

Wheeler visited nine countries in all, including Afghanistan, Albania, Burma, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea and Saudi Arabia. On his journey, he explored how bad a really bad country can get, and what makes a country “evil.” He developed an “evil meter” to measure a country’s evilness, based on its terrorist connections, the government’s treatment of its people, and the threat it poses to other nations.

Surprisingly, Wheeler found that most of the “bad lands” were prettily safe to travel in. They were run by authoritarian governments with strict laws, so foreigners were well protected from crime. Only Iraq and Afghanistan were dangerous for travelers due to the internal conflicts there.

As it turned out, many of the troubled countries that Wheeler visited actually treated him very warmly. Iran was particularly welcoming, rolling out the red carpet for him. Despite the strict rules of the country’s Islamic faith, the women seemed liberal and outgoing. One woman riding a motorcycle even gave Wheeler a friendly wink! The Iranians were also very open about their religion and encouraged him to visit a mosque.

The most bizarre country he visited was North Korea. Wheeler felt it was like a movie set; everything seemed artificial. There was even a rumor that the subway he rode on only went to the stops where tourists were allowed to get off, and other stops were elaborate shams. It was only after talking to a diplomat that he found out the rumor was false.

Through these travels, Wheeler hopes to show that the Bad Lands may not be as forbidding as people think. After all, most people only know what they hear on the news, and there are two sides to every story. In Bad Lands, the portrayal of the other side shows that even at their worst, things aren’t all bad.
