Way back in 140 B.C., the Greek poet Antipater of Sidon described seven remarkable man-made structures. They came to be known as the Seven Wonders of the World. The list was very much a celebration of Greek accomplishments, with five of the seven located in Greece. Seven structures were included because the Greeks believed the number had magical properties.

Unfortunately for us, however, only one of these acclaimed Seven Wonders remains standing today: the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. All of the others have been destroyed, either by natural disasters or conquering armies. One wonder, a massive statue named the Colossus of Rhodes, was actually toppled by an earthquake just 50 years after its completion. As for another, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, some people dispute that it ever existed at all.

While most of these constructions have been lost to us forever, the modern world still contains plenty of its own wonderful constructions. So, inspired by the ancient Greeks, an organization named New7Wonders was set up in 2001 with the aim of finding the seven greatest structures existing today. This ambitious goal was to be achieved by a public vote and would be the first worldwide democratic exercise in human history.

More than 100 nominees were put forward for the honor of being called a New Seven Wonder, and over 100 million votes were cast via the internet and by phone. Eventually, the seven winners were announced in July 2007 at a star-studded ceremony in Lisbon, Portugal. They are, in no particular order: the Great Wall of China, Petra in Jordan, Brazil’s statue of Christ the Redeemer, Peru’s Machu Picchu, Mexico’s Chichen Itza pyramid, the Roman Colosseum, and India’s Taj Mahal. The Pyramid of Giza was not included in the poll, having been awarded special honorary status instead.

While these New Seven Wonders are not officially recognized by heritage organizations like UNESCO, making it onto the list was undoubtedly a huge source of pride for the countries involved. What’s more, the overwhelmingly enthusiastic response of the voters showed how the campaign captured the imagination of millions around the world.

The organizations’ stated goal, to “raise awareness about the world’s unique cultural heritage sites,” has surely been achieved. The creation of a “global memory,” with seven structures people of all nationalities can remember and share, is a noble ambition indeed. Let’s hope that, unlike their predecessors, these New Seven Wonders can remain preserved for the benefit of many generations to come.
