Have you ever wanted to experience the class and culture of a true Bordeaux winery? Instead of traveling to France, you can just visit Shu-Sheng Domaine, a premier vineyard right here in Taichung County, Taiwan. During the summer months, you can walk between rows of green and purple vines heavy with ripe, juicy grapes. Afterwards, relax in the shade and sip some delicious wine.

Nearly half a century ago, Hung Shu-Sheng surveyed the Houli region. With its sunny, arid climate and favorable irrigation, he realized it would be the perfect place to grow grapes. He and his nine sons cultivated his dream through hard work. They sold their grapes to the old Tobacco and Wine Monopoly Bureau, who processed them into rosé and brandy. The business flourished.

Hung Chi-pei, Hung Shu-Sheng’s grandson, eventually took over the family business. However, the monopoly stopped buying grapes in 1996, offering a subsidy for cutting down the vines and switching crops. Hacking down his precious vines stung both his hands and his heart. They had been passed down to him by his forefathers. He was simply unable to surrender them all, so he kept over 30 vines. In order to make ends meet, he grew oranges and tangerines, and opened a karaoke bar and a betel nut stand.

Following the aftermath of the 1999 earthquake, Taichung’s local government resolved to breathe new life into their fruit industry. They fixed their hopes on Hung’s vineyard, and asked him to replant his vines and open Shu-Sheng winery, which was named after his grandfather.

Hung wasted no time getting to work, and was thrilled to find that the roots of his vines were still alive and well because they had been cut above the soil. Using techniques depicted in one of his father’s agricultural books, Hung grafted new vines onto the old trucks, creating plants as hardy as their predecessors.

He buried himself in classes on winemaking. However, his first attempt was in vain due to his lack of skills. In order to improve, he attended classes at many colleges, read winemaking magazines, and experimented with different techniques. When he read about ice wine, he decided to try and make some of his own. The result was a smooth, light-colored and sweet-tasting ice wine, which was awarded a silver medal by the Council of Agriculture in 2006.

Today, Hung is continually looking for ways to improve his winemaking craft. Looking out over the beautiful Shu-Sheng Domaine, he feels connected to, and is thankful for, the land and the generations of his family who took part in shaping it.
