Despite the cold January weather in Taipei, things are getting hot in the mall between the Zhongshan and Shuanglian MRT stations. Bodies and limbs are whirling about in a frenzy of windmills, headspins and handglides. It may sound like a street fight, but there’s nothing violent about what’s happening here. The combatants are actually taking part in a street dance competition.

Street dance has its roots in American hip-hop culture, which emphasizes the expression of self and spirit, and the courage to try new things. It began as a way for African-Americans to express themselves and their frustrations through dance. The trend found its way to Taiwan in the mid-1980s, and has been growing in popularity ever since.

From Ximending in Taipei to Hualien on the island’s east coast, more and more young people in Taiwan are discovering liberation and the freedom of expression of street dance. It is a welcome escape from the relative rigidity of other forms of dance, such as ballet or ballroom dance. There are no set rules in street dance. Instead, it’s all about testing the body’s limits and the limits of one’s own creativity. More and more battle-style competitions are popping up all the time. There are more than 30 competitions in the summer, the hottest time of the year for street dance.

In street dance competitions, competitors take part in a battle in which one will pull off a move, and the other has to follow. The first one who is unable to pull off a better move is the loser. Dance groups, known as crews, will practice for weeks in preparation for a competition.

The moves of street dance take the human body to its absolute physical limits. In doing the windmill, a male dancer rotates on his upper body while his legs spin around in the air. The headspin, one of the most visually stunning moves, has the dancer spinning around on the top of his head. From the headspin or the windmill, dancers can change into a handglide, in which they support their entire body weight with just one hand. This move gets high marks for degree of difficulty.

Street dance has little of the prestige of other forms of dance. However, for many street dancers, this style of dance represents something more than just movement. For Peng Ying-lun, a street dancer for 17 years, “Dance was my only way of reaching out and communicating with the world.” The young dance crews that have followed in this veteran’s footsteps agree, and it is they who will take this underdog of the dance world to new heights.
