With global warming and the oil crisis on everyone’s lips, we all know our planet’s environment faces serious problems. So how about some good news for a change? Get ready for an environmental feel-good story, one that features Taiwan as its bold and brassy leading lady.
In 2006, the Taiwanese government devised a rating system to reward buildings with sustainable, eco-friendly designs. Taiwan was the first country in Asia and the fourth in the world to devise such environmental standards. As a result, innovative “green buildings” began to pop up all around the country. These energy efficient buildings use natural resources to both reduce electricity and water costs and lessen their environmental impact on the Earth.
One notable example is the Beitou Branch of the Taipei Public Library. The building features large windows which let in sunlight and help minimize electricity use, and also collects rainwater to be used in the facility’s washrooms.
Even more exciting are Taiwan’s three Science Parks. The parks are living examples of environmental ethics in action, from their layout and design to the manufacturing processes of the businesses and factories on site. They boast large rainwater tanks, solar-powered water pumps, energy-saving lights, and plenty of green space. What’s more, every company in the park is subject to strict environmental regulations, including proper water and waste management.

The parks’ strict standards encourage the factories to develop cleaner and greener manufacturing equipment. Some companies even go above and beyond park requirements and not only use green technology, but are among the world’s leading manufacturers of green products. Corning Taiwan, for example, produces an eco-friendly form of glass that contains no heavy metals, making it easier to recycle and less likely to cause pollution.
Taiwan’s “green revolution” isn’t limited to its science parks, either. Recently, the city of Kaohsiung partnered solar panel and LED manufacturers to transform the city’s traffic lights. LED lights can last for ten years, and produce seven times as much energy per watt as conventional lights. This, and the blessing of Kaohsiung’s sunny disposition has led to NT$2.6 million in annual savings!
Not to be outdone by green products, green energy in Taiwan is on the rise, too. Taiwan is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of solar panels, and a “Solar City” is currently in development in Tainan. Upon completion, the project promises to provide for the energy needs of 4,000 residential houses, or 11,000 users.
From buildings to products, to the very way we harness energy, Taiwan is certainly taking the green revolution in stride. And the timing couldn’t be better. The fate of the planet may very well depend on some of Taiwan’s rising eco-stars.
