Most superheroes live double lives – saving the world under the cover of a disguise, all while maintaining a seemingly normal life using a separate identity. Superman is actually mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent, Spiderman is plain Peter Parker, and Batman is the billionaire Bruce Wayne. The difference between them and Iron Man, aka entrepreneur Tony Stark, is that everyone in the world knows that jet-setting Stark is the man behind his high-flying alter-ego.

Stark was on a business trip in the Middle East when his life took a drastic turn for the worse. During a kidnapping, pieces of metal became lodged in his chest and could have traveled through his bloodstream, eventually reaching his heart and killing him. But while still in his enemy’s clutches, Tony developed a magnetic plate to stop the metal fragments from ending his life. It was also then that Stark, using the stockpile of weapons and machinery kept by his captors, invented the first version of the suit that would transform him into a near-unstoppable fighting machine.

Though Iron Man is now known worldwide thanks to his blockbuster big screen debut in 2008, he actually started as a comic book hero in 1963. Today, the Iron Man suit is worn by actor Robert Downey Jr., and Tony Stark’s love interest, Virginia “Pepper” Potts, is played by none other than Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow. The first film focused on Tony Stark’s patriotism and his battle against a hostile corporate takeover attempt by his right-hand man. The sequel promises even more action and excitement, and will also dig into some historical themes raised in the comic book series.

The plot of Iron Man 2 picks up six months after the first movie left off – just enough time, apparently, for Stark to have invented a brand-new Iron Man suit, the Mark IV. This time around, the movie explores the Cold War themes present in the comic books of the early ‘60s, a time when the world was rocked by the Cuban Missile Crisis and nuclear annihilation seemed an ever-present threat.

Whiplash is the son of Crimson Dynamo, whom hardcore fans might recognize as the Soviet villain in the original comic series.

This forces Tony to look into the Stark Expo, the equivalent of the World’s Fair, where the world’s best and brightest present new technology. Also featured as main themes are the energy crisis facing the world, a mysterious development known as “intelecrop technology,” and a possible addition to the periodic table of elements.
