This summer, for the first time, Taiwan welcomes London’s prestigious Royal Ballet. As part of the ROC’s 100th year celebrations, the internationally renowned troupe will perform at the National Theater from June 30th to July 3rd. The Royal Ballet is putting on two different shows during its stay in Taipei; the first is three short dances of modern ballets, and the second is “Giselle,” a mainstay of the company’s classical repertoire.

Founded in 1931, Britain’s leading ballet corps is housed at the stunning Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London, where its dancers train, rehearse, and perform. The company has its own dance school, the Royal Ballet School, which nurtures some of the best dancers in the world. The Royal Ballet also employs one hundred or so of the most accomplished international ballet dancers.

The company’s exciting Mixed Programmes trio will give Taipei audiences a taste of contemporary ballet. The first performance, “Chroma,” is an abstract 30-minute ballet that pushed its ten dancers to their physical limits. It’s followed by a retelling of a 1980 ballet, “Rhapsody,” which puts a modern spin on a classical movement. The final dance, “DGV,” is inspired by France’s high speed train, so the performance is rapid and thrilling.

该舞团震撼人心的《英伦经典》三部曲将带给台北的观众一同体验现代芭蕾的魅力。最先登场的舞码《色饱和度》长30分钟，是一出挑战10名表演舞者身体极限的抽象舞步。紧接在后的是1980年舞码《狂想曲》，舞团将在此经典作品中添入现代元素。最后的压轴舞码《DGV》创作灵感源自法国高速列车，因此舞步节奏快速、充满张力。

“Giselle,” in the other hand, was first performed in Paris in 1841 and is considered by many to be one of the most romantic ballets of all. If there’s a heart of stone in the audience, this tragic, haunting love story will make it crumble. Whichever performance you see, the Royal Ballet is bound to make your head spin.
