Several decades ago, one eye specialist had a different kind of “vision” – to create a flying hospital. Although the idea may sound bizarre at first, the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital is changing lives around the world by helping to restore sight to the blind.

The history of ORBIS International dates back to the 1970s when Dr. David Paton, a head eye doctor at Baylor College, became frustrated over the extremely low level of eye care offered throughout the developing world. During his travels abroad, he realized the root cause of the problem: It wasn’t financially feasible for doctors and nurses to travel overseas to get up-to-speed on many key procedures. As a result, millions of people were suffering from painful conditions such as cataracts and glaucoma or losing their eyesight because basic treatments weren’t available to them. So, Dr. Paton came up with the idea of a mobile teaching hospital that would travel around the globe and train medical professionals in the latest ophthalmic techniques. So, he partnered with some key figures in the worlds of business and aviation and turned his concept into a reality.

Since ORBIS Flying Hospital first took flight in 1982, it has journeyed to over 87 countries. Local doctors and nurses are invited on board for training in the plane’s 48-seat classroom. They can attend lectures with world-renowned eye specialists, watch live broadcasts of surgeries, and even ask surgeons questions using a two-way audio-visual system. In addition, the organization has teamed up with several local partners including hospitals, and universities. Through these efforts, top-notch health care in the developing world is finally starting to see the light of day.
