Different animals have tails for different reasons. Dogs use them to express emotions. They show joy by wagging their tails. And they show fear by hiding their tails between their legs. Alligators use their tails for protection. They fight enemies by swinging their tails at them. Cats use their tails to balance. Without tails, cat would have trouble walking on fences.
