Aki Kondo (近藤亚希) is the creator of this cute bear. In 2003, she was a painter of San-X, a well-known company in Japan. One day, Kondo watched a show about pet dogs. She wanted to keep a pet, but was too busy to have one. That's when she decided to make Rilakkuma and his friends to keep her company.

Soon, Rilakkumaand his friends were everywhere! They were on stationery such as notebooks and pens. They even had their own picture books and video games. People immediately fell in love with these adorable characters.
