Nicknamed the Sea to Sky Games, the 2010 Winter Olympics will be hosted by Canada next month. Prepare to be transported, at least in your mind’s eye, to the spectacular settings of coastal Vancouver and mountainous Whistler, British Columbia.

Look for the athletes with red maple leafs on their uniforms to exult in their love of all things winter and enjoy the usual home-snow advantages as they go after a record medal haul.

The other dominant North American team, the United States, will feel comfortable being back on the continent eight years after the Salt Lake City Games. Germany will attempt to lead the medal count for the third consecutive time.

Vancouver is the most populous city (2.2 million in the metro area) to hold a Winter Games, and the warmest (average February temperature is 40.6 degrees). It also will be the first to hold indoor opening and closing ceremonies, at BC Place Stadium, although there still are questions about ventilation for the flame that will burn for 16 days.

Financial concerns

The main concern is about the Olympic bills to be paid after the snow melts, the tourists leave and the TV cameras are turned off. Canada won the bid seven years ago, when the economic picture was much brighter. But the Olympic venues have been completed on time and on budget, for $580 million. Security, however, will cost $715 million, five times the original estimate by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The plan to turn the Athletes’ Village into low – and middle – income housing was abandoned, and it will be sold to developers.

Critics say the money could be better spent fighting homeless and drug addiction on Vancouver’s east side, helping native peoples of the First Nations and protecting the environment.

Positivity reigns

Still, the optimism, cheerfulness and practicality that Canadians are known for has dominated the mood as the country prepares to showcase its gem of a western province.

“There’s a lot of positive anxiety,” John Furlong, CEO of Vancouver’s organizing committee, said at a countdown ceremony last year. “It’s like a dog year. It’s going to feel longer. It’s a year where we get to perfect our craft.”

The torch relay will travel across the country and over the North Pole – on foot, dogsled and snowmobile. Then the competition will begin: Alpine and Nordic events at Whistler Mountain, sliding events at Blackcomb Mountain, freestyle skiing and snowboarding at Cypress Mountain north of Vancouver, with figure skating, speed skating, hockey and curling in and around the city.

Venues, events and mascots

The signature venue, à la Beijing’s Water Cube or Lillehammer’s Viking Ship, could be the site for long-track speed skating, the Richmond Oval. Hockey will be played on a narrower, NHL-size rink at the home of the Canucks. Curling, very popular in Canada, will be held at the $87 million Vancouver Olympic Centre.

Meet the mascots, creatures inspired by First Nations myths: Miga (a sea bear), Quatchi (a Sasquatch) and Sumi (a combo Orca whale, black bear and Thunderbird).

The newest daredevil event in the continuing campaign to appeal to a younger demographic is ski cross or skier cross, a sort of roller derby or motocross on skis. Four skiers on a man-made course with banked turns and jumps race to the finish line. As in snowboard cross, which was a hit in 2006, there is lots of elbowing and crashing.

Rejected for the 2010 program were mixed doubles curling, biathlon mixed relay and women’s ski jumping (a group of female jumpers is suing to be included, claiming discrimination).

The Richmond Oval

The Richmond Olympic Oval will host speed skaters from around the world in the 2010 Winter Olympics. The public can skate here now, and gaze in awe at this cavernous but graceful $164-million facility along the Fraser River, the largest new building constructed for these Olympics.

For many visitors, Richmond is typically a Vancouver suburb to drive through, rather than explore. But the Oval is just the latest on a list of attractions making Richmond a destination in its own right, complete with hundreds of Asian restaurants and shops, a vibrant weekend night market, a historic fishing village, miles of waterfront trails and a spectacular Buddhist temple.

The building is winning acclaim for its design, functionality and environmental ethic. The glass north side provides striking views of British Columbia’s Coast Mountains. The arched 6.5-acre roof evokes the wings of a heron, a bird native to the area’s wetlands.

The panels of its wooden ceiling are made from 1 million board feet of timber killed by pine beetles, wood that in the past would have been discarded. Rainwater from the roof is collected to help flush the toilets.

All those details, and the dazzling effect of a mega-constellation of ceiling lights reflected on the ice, create an almost surreal experience for the first-time viewer. After the Games, the Oval will be operated as a sports and fitness complex for the city of Richmond, which built and owns it. A variety of exercise classes are already held here.

During the Olympics, the Oval will hold 12 medal events over 14 days, all long-track speed skating. Meanwhile, short-track speed skating will take place at Vancouver’s Pacific Coliseum at Hastings Park, which will also host figure skating.
